File this under “there’s got to be a better way!” I use RealPlayer for Mobile on my Palm for music and this works great if you’ve got an MP3 file to synchronize over. But I wanted to access some podcasts that were only available either as audio streams or as files accessible through iTunes. So how to get them from iTunes to my Palm?
It’s not actually that awful a kludge but I’m going to keep working on a better way. The best part is that iTunes allows me to subscribe to the podcasts – for American Public Media’s Marketplace, PBS’s Washington Week with Gwen Ifill, among others – and download the audio files. When iTunes grabs the (free) files, they are downloaded to my local PC. Once they’re on my PC, they’re in a known place. I can then open up Realplayer, browse to the folders, and synchronize the files over to the Palm.
Washington Week does this better than the other feeds I’m looking at, because you can opt either to get the podcast or download the MP3 directly from their site. So I can browse over to PBS.org on my wi-fi enabled Palm and download the file for later use without worrying about a sync.
Like I said, there’s got to be a better way.
