I like music that fuses traditional instruments with modern sound. Our family has spent a lot of time listening to groups like the Pogues, Delhi to Dublin, Flogging Molly., A Tribe Called Red, and Outback. I’ve been spending some time looping back through these and similar musicians I’ve come across more recently.
Formerly of A Tribe Called Red, his first EP, Powwowstep, was released a few months back. I love Indomitable and Crazy Horse but the entire EP is great. A typical playlist will include this, Nation II Nation, and some (any) Northern Cree & Friends albums (I especially like Big River Cree’s You’re Just an Old Song).
It’s hard to make – and sell – music for Persian musicians based in Iran. This rock band was new to me but incorporates tar and other elements so subtly you almost can’t tell they’re there. Darvish is still my favorite track – probably the very Irish sounding start! – from Narhal-e Heyrat but the whole album is good. It was an early effort so now I need to grab something more recent. For a full on Persian kick, you can add the Tehran Vocal Ensemble’s Vocapella albums (the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is particularly fun).
