Battling Wills

The river was nearly covered a few days ago, although running water continued to appear in various places.  It was inconsistent, though, which makes me wonder whether deeper water in those places had as much to do with it as the river’s movement. It was still battling today and the warm temperatures were helping it …

Snow Boa

The ice is melting and has largely turned from snow-covered, white to a slushy greenish color as the snow melts.  There are small openings in the ice up and down the river and I expect some of them are animal made. This one has a rock protruding out of it and it was a funny …

Goose Down

Canada geese seem remarkably nonchalant.  Most of the birds on the river have disappeared, and the ones that remained tended to stay on the open water.  This goose was sitting with a pair of Mallard ducks on a small outcrop of ice.  They all seemed to just be taking in the day, ready to move …

Ice Bergs

The river started to freeze over and the last week the ice has been swinging from hard, and snow covered, to slushy and completely thawed.  Today the warming trend continued, although there was snow in the air.  Small bits of ice were breaking off upriver and floating down.  These two had caught themselves, and pointed …

Water Line

I have never noticed before how often the water level shifts in the river.  When we have any form of precipitation, rain or snow, the level moves up and down far more than I would have expected and far more quickly.  The ice on the bank formed while the water was up but you can …

Cracked Ice

When thin ice forms above a temporary bit of water, which then recedes from below it, there are sometimes interesting patterns left behind.  This ice had formed above water pooling in an uneven bit of pavement.  Then someone had stepped on it.  It’s funny to think that the lines reflect where water levels paused – …

Ice Appearing

The temperatures have dropped into the 20s (Fahrenheit) and, although the snow has disappeared, it is bitter when the wind blows.  I was still a bit surprised to see ice on the river and it occurred to me that I couldn’t recall ever seeing it appear.  It always seemed to just arrive as a cover, …

Ice Crystals

The ice is forming on the river.  I had expected it would grow smoothly with the water rushing by.  These crystals appeared on ice that was gathering behind a large pile of wood that had fallen into the river.  You can see the free water just below the crystals.
